Day 209. April 10, 1 PM

First dandelions in bloom. It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood.

Sunshine + Saturday = a crowd.

Six sullen teens hunch by a van while an earnest woman holds forth, lecturing them about something or other. One smokes, four stare at their phones, one pretends to be listening.

Bright yellow Corvette with vanity plate USNSEALS.

Overheard on the pathway:

• Man talking to woman with arms folded over her chest: “Well, it happens. I don’t wanna dwell.”

• Daughter: “You’re so mean.” Mom, grinning: “I know!”

• Family group. Littlest kid, chasing sibs: “Wait for MEEE!”

Even so, there are moments of peace. The water’s glassine. When I stand in the sweet spot between the Lemon Squeeze and the rise, there’s no sound at all. Ears full of stillness.

A row of daffodils blooms at the foot of the hill. How did they get there? Some DEP maintenance man with a poetic streak, or did a rogue walker roll bulbs down the hillside to see if they’d take?

The creek spill’s developed some kind of algae bloom, so it’s streaked with unearthly blue green. The heron glides from one side to the other, takes a couple of steps, then flies back. That’s three days in a row now. I hope he’s a fixture.

Shrub that looks like witch hazel, budding in acid-green tiny curled fists.
